A hydrogen backbone needs storage. Common Futures supported EBN in analysing the energy system value of underground hydrogen storage.

The rapid expansion of renewable energy sources and the variability of their production creates a greater need for storage in the energy system. Underground hydrogen storage in salt caverns and gas fields can meet storage needs from days to seasons, for example to produce electricity and heat during windless winter weeks and to capture peak solar PV production in summer.

Common Futures analysed short- and long-term hydrogen storage in salt caverns and gas fields, with insights on state of charge profiles, storage cycles and costs. The Common Futures hydrogen storage simulation tool was used for this purpose.
